Getting Language Immersion at Lincoln High School

Although the current plan is to not include Dual Language Immersin at Lincoln High School when it reopens in 2019, Rick Burke of the Seattle School Board is reopening the discussion of DLI being placed at Lincoln. After his Saturday (December 9, 2017) community meeting with parents, he sent staff a specific request to include DLI consideration in the current pathway scenarios. Scenarios include the DLI pathway going to both Lincoln and Ingraham, or just one of these. If you would like to send comments on this matter, email, Michele Aoki (International Education Administrator), and Ruth Medsker (Lincoln Principal).

The McD PTA Advocacy team recommends to:

  • Advocate to delay this year's high school enrollment for a couple months. This will give staff time to work out a better plan, and it still gives families enough time to plan, with assurance about their kids' pathways. The district delayed high school enrollment when they last rolled out the growth-boundaries plan to give time to tweak things, so there is a precedent for this.
  • Advocate to include program placement, including dual-language/immersion, at Lincoln, as part of boundaries work.  At the Jan 10th board meeting, the board wlll vote on options for high school boundaries.
  • Advocate for dual-language/advanced language pathway and instruction at Lincoln.

Strengthen the Dual Language Program at Hamilton

There has been a lot of talk about the need to strengthen the current Dual Language offerings at Hamilton. Please share your thoughts with SPS

International Schools/Immersion Advocacy

McDonald Int'l families and others across the district are advocating to see content-based language instruction after elementary school. Currently, at Hamilton Middle School and beyond, Spanish and Japanese language classes are taught as electives (competing for time in student's packed schedules with other electives like sports, art and music) in the classic fashion with a focus on grammar, vocabulary, and so on. Many families would like to see the curriculum-based model from John Stanford and McDonald Int'l Schools continue on in middle and high school, where curriculum-based content like math, science, or humanities is taught in the target language.

Please contact Kate Koester if you have questions or want to join in the conversation - everyone is welcome!

  • International School/Dual Language Immersion Advocacy Group: Started by McDonald’s Jennifer Monahan deMella, this facebook group’s aim is to join forces with other International Schools and work with the district to focus on the unique issues we will each face as we develop through elementary into middle and high school.

  • In order to consider expanding Dual Language programming into Middle School, the School Board first wants to take a closer look at the matrices of student success, and to hear our goals for International Schools. SPS Director Rick Burke and International Education Administrator for SPS Dr. Michele Anciaux Aoki, will be joining McDonald Int'l parents and community members in the school library for a collaborative discussion at the next Dual Language Immersion/International School Advocacy Meeting - Feb 18, 2016 (7:30pm @ McDonald Int'l)

  • SPS Board meeting: meet the newly voted in Board of Directors -  bring signs asking Board to “Support International Schools" - Dec 2, 2015 (4:15pm @ JSCEE)
  • District-wide International School/Immersion Advocacy meeting - Oct 20, 2015
  • Trends in International Education Event - Sept 1, 2015
  • McDonald International School Immersion Advocacy group meetings - contact with questions
  • District meetings related to advocacy - planning to attend? Sign up here!
  • There are four International School Community Meetings happening across the district in April and May. Click here for all the details and to RSVP.
