We, at McDonald, are committed to hiring highly qualified staff and providing an environment that not only supports each child's individual learning needs but also encourages that child's academic success.
In order to help ensure that we are providing the best resources and programs available, we are committed to actively considering the latest research on innovative programs and best learning practices.
Our school's curriculum will include the following engaging programs:
McDonald will implement a balanced literacy program that supports reading and writing as complementary processes.
This will include implementation of the Columbia Teachers College Readers and Writers Workshop - an innovative approach to teaching reading and writing that has gained both local and national recognition for its effectiveness.
Under this program students and teachers focus on reading and writing for significant blocks of time throughout the school week.
Readers have time to read just-right books independently every day with independent mini-lessons focusing on how to use reading strategies effectively. Students are encouraged to use their own personal stories to inspire their writing, and are given ample on-the-spot opportunities to share their work with teachers and fellow students.
This teaching approach is designed to help teachers act as mentors and coaches for students as they learn to become independent readers and writers.
McDonald's science program will be based on the National Science Foundation's hands-on, inquiry-based investigations program. Under this program, students will be able to explore in depth a variety of subjects in earth science, physical science, and life science.
Everyday math employs realistic contexts (money, concrete measurements, etc.) and asks children to mentally reach and explain their own solutions to problems.
Drawing on more than 20 years of research, Everyday Math has a proven track record in improving not only children's performance on standardized tests, but their overall computational abilities and confidence in dealing with mathematics.
The Seattle School District identified cultural competency and global perspectives as components of McDonald's instructional offerings. In support of this goal we will explore opportunities to incorporate the global perspective into our programs and activities.
We will use programs such as Second Step and activities such as friendship circles to help nurture and support each student's individual social and emotional growth.
